Assisting Students in Distress Faculty and Staff Resource Guide

Overview

At Santa Fe College, the well-being of our students is a top priority. The Assisting Students in Distress resource provides faculty and staff with the tools and guidance needed to recognize, respond to, and refer students who may be experiencing emotional, psychological, or academic difficulties. By identifying early warning signs and knowing the appropriate support services available, we can foster a safe and supportive campus environment. This page offers key strategies, contact information, and reporting procedures to ensure students receive the help they need in a timely and effective manner.

TIER 1

Imminent threat to safety of the student or community
  • Issue
    • Active self-injurious behavior
    • Active threats of suicide
    • Fight/physical altercation
    • Medical emergency
    • Obvious intoxication
    • Presence of a weapon
    • Suspicious behavior
    • Written or verbal statements about specific intent to harm others

TIER 2

Immediate safety is not a concern but intervention is required as soon as possible, or at least within 24 hours.
  • Concerning Behaviors
    • Behavior that appears bizarre or out of touch with reality
    • Reports of domestic violence, stalking, or sexual assault (current or past)
    • Significant emotional distress
    • Vague statements about intent to harm self or others
    • Verbal aggression (no immediate threat)

    • Notify Counseling and Wellness Center staff of referral
